I usually use underwraps but on very thin rods like the Century stealth S1 or some CTS where it may interact with the blank I think no underwrap is OK and maybe preferred. One most normal surf rods I think it does no harm. It is a way to add color/decor to a rod too as someone mentioned.

While underwraps can be used on any rod, they are usually used on the heavier saltwater rods. Underwraps are used for guarding the blank from the guide digging into the blank and damaging it as well as decoration.
